Phil Christianson, Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Christianson joined HealthSmart in November, 2016. He previously served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Payment America Systems, Focused Health Solutions, RealMed, and Corporate Benefit Services of America, leading each to differentiated and improved services for employers, payers, physicians and hospitals. He also led divisions of The Walt Disney Company and United Health Group.  Just prior to joining HealthSmart, Mr. Christianson acted as an advisor to and investor in related health services and information technology companies. 
 
Mr. Christianson earned a Master of Business Administration from The University of Southern California, a Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School, and a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.


 


Bill Wallace, Executive Vice President

William (Bill) Wallace joined HealthSmart in 2017 as a Director and Executive Vice President of HealthSmart Benefit Management, where he oversees business development, sales & marketing, account management, as well as HealthSmartRx Solutions, the company’s prescription benefit administrator.
 
During his 35-year career in healthcare, he has cofounded several healthcare services and technology companies as well as serving on the senior leadership teams of Medical Care America (ambulatory surgery centers and home infusion), Perot Systems Healthcare (information technology services and business process outsourcing), Medco Health Solutions (pharmacy benefit administration) and Diplomat Pharmacy (specialty pharmacy). Most recently, he was the Executive Vice President of Pharmaceutical Strategies Group, the nation’s largest independent pharmacy benefits advisory firm. Bill is also a Director at several healthcare services and technology companies.
 

   


 

Loren W. Claypool, Chief Operating Officer

Loren W. Claypool joined HealthSmart in June 2013. He leads the operations team and is responsible for core solutions delivery across the company. He came to HealthSmart from VCPI/Extendicare Health Services, Inc. (EHSI) where he was vice president, managing director and CIO respectively. He was instrumental in creating VCPI’s innovative product portfolio and its growth strategy to become the leading nationwide provider of outsourced technology solutions to the long term/post-acute healthcare sector. He also drove VCPI’s name recognition by implementing its branding and an integrated social media strategy.

In addition, Mr. Claypool has a high level of expertise in strategy development, information technology and change management. His background includes leading start-up and established environments in the technology, insurance, healthcare, and retail industries, with both national and international experience. He is a thought leader and a public speaker with several published articles.

Mr. Claypool is an active community servant with leadership roles in economic development, higher education, and arts organizations.

   

Marc Zech, Executive Vice President Strategic Markets

Marc Zech joined HealthSmart in 1997 as Director of Information Systems. During his career at HealthSmart, he has contributed to leading the technology, operational and strategic 

direction of the organization, with experience in managing all administrative product lines and service centers across the country. More recently, he has focused on overseeing the integration of acquisitions, leading operations for our unique retiree health plan, Medicare administration platform, and HealthSmart’s Native American program.

He currently leads a team that provides dedicated strategic and tactical management of growing market segments for HealthSmart. This includes product development, sales and account management, customer relationship management and technical services.

Prior to joining HealthSmart, Mr. Zech managed systems for a regional Third Party Administrator and has also had prior leadership roles in claims, customer service, premium billing, business analysis and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) development.

He has more than 20 years of experience in healthcare and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics — Actuarial Science.

 


 

 

 

 

 

   Pamela Coffey, Chief Clinical Officer

 

 

Ms. Coffey is a registered nurse with degrees in nursing and business administration. She is certified in healthcare quality management with specialties in managed care and case management through the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians. She has been involved in senior leadership roles in managed care for 25 years and joined HealthSmart in 1997. In her current position, she manages all of HealthSmart’s clinical programs. Ms. Coffey has an extensive background in managing risk, as well as structuring data-centric clinical management programs. Her expertise in operations and clinical programs has made a significant contribution to the development and success of the services offered by HealthSmart. She leads a diverse and dynamic team that delivers predictive population management methodologies and flexible plan designs to meet the unique needs of HealthSmart’s clients.

Ms. Coffey is actively involved in the healthcare community and has served on several task forces focusing on wellness and healthcare quality. She promoted the recognition of Healthcare Heroes and service excellence through her service on the Board of Directors and as President of the Alliance for Healthcare Excellence. Ms. Coffey has an extensive background in managing Medicare and Medicare Advantage populations, as well as structuring data-centric disease management programs. She is often requested to speak on clinical analytics and unique solutions to health risk trends.

Sarah Bittner, General Counsel 

As HealthSmart’s Deputy General Counsel, Ms. Bittner provides legal advice on a wide array of corporate legal issues. She plays a key role in business and risk management strategies.

Ms. Bittner is the staff expert on the Affordable Care Act, including training team members on health care reform and preparing client communications. She is also HealthSmart’s HIPAA Privacy and Security Officer, developing and implementing privacy and security policies and procedures required under HIPAA and the HITECH Act. In addition, Ms. Bittner manages labor and employment legal issues that include the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). All pre-litigation and general litigation matters, as well as managing outside counsel are also under her purview.

Ms. Bittner graduated from the Texas Tech University School of Law in 2008. She also attended Southern Methodist University School of Law from 2007 – 2008 and has a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from the University of Texas at Austin (2004)

She is active in The State Bar of Texas, the Texas Young Lawyers Association and the Dallas Bar Association.


   

Carol Proctor, Chief People Officer

Carol Proctor joined HealthSmart in January, 2015. She is an accomplished human resources professional with more than twenty years of experience in various fields, including healthcare (St. Anthony Hospital, Oklahoma City), manufacturing (Bridgestone/Firestone) and telecommunication (Cox Communications, Oklahoma City).
 
Ms. Proctor also has considerable experience in leading organizational change and transformation within a multi-facility/multi-site environment. She has proven expertise in all facets of human resources: employee/labor relations, talent acquisition/recruiting, compensation, workforce planning, performance management, succession planning, workers compensation and employee health benefits. An integral part of her skillset is creating and managing strong business relationships within industries such as media, sales, construction, engineering, IT, finance, retail and customer care/call center environments.
 
She has an MBA, a Masters of Arts in Organizational Leadership and a Bachelor of Science in Management from Mid-America Christian University (MACU) in Oklahoma City.




 

Matthew Thompson, Chief Financial Officer

   

Matthew Thompson was named Chief Financial Officer in July 2015. He previously served as Senior Vice President of Finance since joining HealthSmart in January 2015 and spent over six years with American CareSource Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq:  GNOW), an operator of urgent care centers and a national network of ancillary health care providers. From 2010 to 2014, he served as Chief Financial Officer of American CareSource, and was responsible for all finance and accounting functions, investor relations and was instrumental in the company’s acquisition and integration of ten urgent care centers.
 
Prior to American CareSource, Mr. Thompson workedalmost ten years with Tyler Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: TYL), a leading provider of integrated, end-to-end information management solutions and services to local governments. While there, he held several financial management positions, including Division Controller and Assistant Corporate Controller. Matthew started his career at Ernst & Young LLP, where he was on the audit staff that focused various small entrepreneurially-focused organizations.
 
He has a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Baylor University and is also a Certified Public Accountant.
 

Tom Mafale, Chief Sales Officer

Tom Mafale joined HealthSmart in May, 2017 where he oversees the Commercial Sales team and drives business development. His priorities are the self-funded employer and plan sponsor segments.

He is an accomplished and award-winning executive, with more than 20 years of experience. Mafale comes to HealthSmart from Emblem Health, where he served as Corporate Vice President and Sales Officer. Prior to Emblem Health, Mafale was Executive Vice President, Chief Sales Officer at M3 Healthcare Technologies and Senior Vice President/Head of Sales Operations, National Accounts for Aetna. Mafale also served in several Commercial Sales leadership positions in his 20 years at United Healthcare, including the role of Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Public Sector.

Mafale is a graduate of Fairfield University, with a B.S. in Business Management. His community involvement includes serving on the Board of United Way.

 
Les McPhearson, Chief Client Care Officer

Les McPhearson joined HealthSmart in May, 2017. He is a nationally recognized speaker on health trends and innovation. He has an extensive background in product development, corporate strategy, consumer engagement, project management, health and wellness, loyalty and retention, mergers and acquisitions, as well as emerging technologies.

Most recently, McPhearson served as CEO of United Benefit Advisors (UBA). At UBA, McPhearson was responsible for financial performance, operations, marketing, partner firm recruitment and compliance and strategic relationships. Previously, he served as Vice President of Product Innovation and Strategy at Trustmark. McPhearson was also Senior Director of Business Innovation at Florida Blue and Director of Innovation at Humana. He has also served as a Board Member of the Northern Illinois Association of Health Underwriters.

McPhearson is a graduate of the University of Louisville, with an M.B.A. in Business Administration and Management. He also has a B.S. in Math and Computer Science from Samford University. McPhearson served as a Lieutenant in the Navy for five years as a Nuclear Trained Surface Warfare Officer.
